The Peak District is one of the best places in the UK for a motorhome trip. With winding country roads, rolling hills and traditional stone villages, it offers the perfect mix of scenic driving and relaxed exploring. This three day itinerary takes in some of the Peak District’s most popular spots while leaving enough time to slow down and enjoy the journey.
Day 1: Bakewell and the Monsal Trail
Start your trip in Bakewell, a charming market town in the heart of the national park. Known for its traditional stone buildings and riverside setting, Bakewell is a great first stop for motorhome travellers.
Spend the morning wandering through the town centre, browsing independent shops and stopping at a local café for a Bakewell pudding. There are several campsites nearby, making it an easy place to settle in for your first night.
In the afternoon, head to the Monsal Trail. This former railway line has been transformed into one of the Peak District’s most scenic walking and cycling routes. The trail passes through old tunnels, across impressive viaducts and alongside beautiful limestone valleys.
The route is mostly flat, making it suitable for all ages and abilities. It is an easy way to experience some of the area’s best scenery without a difficult hike.
Day 2: Castleton, Winnats Pass and Mam Tor
On your second day, drive towards Castleton, one of the Peak District’s most popular villages. Surrounded by dramatic hills and walking routes, it is a favourite stop for visitors exploring the national park.
Just outside the village is Winnats Pass, a narrow limestone valley with steep sides and incredible views. The road through the pass is one of the most photographed in the Peak District, although motorhome drivers should take it slowly as some sections can feel tight.
Afterwards, make your way to Mam Tor for an afternoon walk. Often called the “Shivering Mountain”, Mam Tor offers panoramic views across the Hope Valley and surrounding countryside. The walk to the summit is manageable for most people and well worth the effort.
