Three cheers for new real ale shop

A DIGGLE couple are brewing up a storm after opening a Saddleworth Real Ale Shop on Uppermill’s High Street.

Greg and Cath O’Neill were joined by Oldham Mayor John Hudson and his wife Kathleen as they threw open the doors of their new business last month.p13 real ale company (1)

The special guests raised a glass and sampled the sparkling range of quality bottled beers with distinctive local and international flavours that the shop has to offer.

The couple has stocked their smart ground-floor premises with 90 different  craft beers from reputable micro-brewers and specialist ciders.

Greg, 40, said: “I’ve always had  a fascination for good beers and Uppermill seems a natural place to open a shop.

“Locals love good, quality produce and we are hoping the amount of visitors and tourists really will make it a great success.

“We’ve already received some very approving comments from drinkers who are seeking excellent alternative choices for good ales.

“Alongside the predominately British range we have got top flight beers from the continent and America, including three of their Top Ten — Boston, Liberty and Flying Dog.”

Cath originally came up with the idea of the shop with her husband a couple of years ago but only decided to launch their plan after she was made redundant.

She said: “I know it will work – it’s a great adventure and I’ve actually developed a liking for beer too. There certainly are some delicious ales.

“We’ve hit on a niche in the market and we’re just a little bit different. For example, our dearest classical beer, Earl Grey, brewed in Manchester, is only £4.50.”

The O’Neill’s are the possibility of eventually starting their own microbrewery too.

Cllr Hudson, who holds office as Mayor until June because of borough and EU elections, said he was delighted to have opened a record number of new businesses across the borough.

“These new shops and businesses launched by young people are certainly a great way to help the local economy and provide jobs,” he said.
