THE Adamson Military Band is hoping to raise the roof in Uppermill as they perform in the village for the first time ever later this month.
The military-style wind band, which boasts brass instruments as well as a woodwind section, will take to the stage at the Civic Hall on Sunday, July 28.
Rather than a traditional evening event, their Summer Concert will take in the afternoon from 2pm-4pm, and there will also be a raffle, light refreshments and a bar.
Karen Bailey, band secretary, explained: “We normally do our indoor concerts in the Tameside area, and usually in the evenings, but we are trying to reach a wider audience.
“We decided as an experiment and put our summer on a concert on a Sunday lunch time.
“We have a varied programme, with music including Entry of the Gladiators, The Bronze Horse overture, medleys from Grease, The Jersey Boys, The Symphonic Beatles, Billy Joel’s Just the Way You Are, the Arcadians overture and other light-hearted pieces.
“It all promises to be a most enjoyable afternoon.”
The 25-strong band was formed in 1888 by workers at the Daniel Adamson Engineering Works in Dukinfield, where it has been based ever since, in various establishments.
It is an amateur, community band and rehearses in its own band room on Russell Street (Dukinfield) on Wednesday evenings.
It plays a wide repertoire of music, including military marches, light classical, medleys from shows old and new and many other genres from an extensive library of about 3,000 pieces of music.
The band is not able to compete in Whit Friday contests because it is a wind band, not brass, nor does it compete in a league, but in the past has been very successful in entertainment contests.
It also undertakes all kinds of engagements, from marching displays, Remembrance parades and services to weddings, carnivals and summer fairs.
The Adamson Military Band’s Summer Concert will take place on Sunday, July 28 at Uppermill Civic Hall, Lee Street, Uppermill, OL3 6AE.
Tickets cost £8 or £5 concessions and are available from The Little Shop, 50 High Street, Uppermill, OL3 6HA or ring Jenny to reserve on 07946 874984 or pay on the door.
The band always welcomes new players, so if anyone is interested just come along to a rehearsal or visit their website (www.adamsonband.org.uk) for more details.
