Sweet success for Andrew as he transforms former pub into candy haven

THE SWEET taste of success is being brought to a former roadside pub in Waterhead which has been transformed into a candy haven by a Saddleworth man.

Andrew Heffernan opened his gaily-painted sweet shop ‘Beau Jazzles’ last month to sell nostalgic sweets from bygone times – and business is booming.p15 andrews sweet shop2

“Parents who remember the great taste of sweets of yesterday are really keen to relive memories of their childhood,” said 42-year-old Andrew.

“And kiddies who are curious to taste something different have really got on board with the sweets.”

Andrew launched the shop – formerly The Plough – on Huddersfield Road with his fiancée Anuaska Mercer, with whom he has a son, Beau, aged two.

And centrepiece at the shop is a two-wheeled Candy Cart laden with brightly-coloured sticks of rock, giant lollipops and a wide assortment of sweets.

The shop shelves are packed with jars of sweets including bon-bons, cough candy, sherbet lemons, humbugs, liquorice allsorts and dolly mixtures.  p15 andrews sweet shop3

Andrew said: “We pride ourselves on providing a full range of handmade traditional sweets all made in the UK.

“We wanted to recapture a little piece of nostalgia and many children in the area have never seen or sampled these kinds of delicious sweets before.

“There used to be a sweet shop adjacent to old bus terminus here but that closed a long time ago.”

He added: “We’ve got every kind of shop in Huddersfield road, from takeaways to off licences, but nothing like Beau Jazzles.

“I’m already finding Grandmas and Grandads introducing today’s generation to the wonders that older people remember from their childhood.”

Andrew is backing up his sweet sales with old-fashioned ginger beers and cordials and the Candy Cart is available for hire for weddings, christenings and other parties.
