Apology for Church Road delays

A UTILITY giant has sent a letter of apology to scores of Uppermill householders who have faced months of frustration and diversions because of a massive sewer refurbishment.

DIVERSIONS: Through Greenfield and Diggle

United Utilities (UU) has written to residents because plans to have the £1million project completed before schools returned for the autumn term have been hampered by construction problems.

But now UU say work at Church Road – a vital link to St Chad’s CE primary school and hundreds of residents – is expected to be completed by Friday, September 12.

The letter says: “We understand it’s been difficult to avoid us while we’ve been carrying out work.

“We were hoping to reopen the road before the schools in the area reopen, but unfortunately we experienced some delays during construction.

“We’re sorry if this work affects you and your daily routine,” it adds.

Diversions were put in place via Greenfield and Diggle and will remain in place until Church Road reopens.

Oldham Metropolitan Borough Council said: “To ease congestion on the diversion routes, two separate routes are signed.

“Although this is not enforced as a regulatory one-way system and the routes remain open to two-way traffic, please use the routes in that manner to avoid congestion at school times.

“In order to gain access to Church Road, use the signed route from Greenfield via Gellfield Lane. To exit the area, use the signed route via Ward Lane into Diggle.

“Alternatively, please use on-street and off-street parking areas in the village. Church Road is open to pedestrians.”
