60x40Small business advice: What to do if your internet stops working
By Peter Dorotiak, Director of Aspect IT

THE MAJORITY of small businesses rely on the internet. Whether it is to send and receive emails, manage a website or process internet orders – internet connectivity is paramount.

Any business that experiences an internet outage will suffer and inevitably, if it continues, it will have a serious effect on productivity and bottom line.

So how can a small business deal with the loss of their internet connection? Well, here are some great tips on what to check and how to prepare.

When your internet goes off, follow these three simple checks:

  1. Ensure your router is plugged in.
It’s amazing how many people accidently switch them off.
  2. Reboot your modem/router.
This is the first piece of advice any IT support technician will give you and nine times out of 10 it works!
  3. Contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP).
You can’t obviously get to their website, so keep their contact details handy! ISPs can check for faults and let you know if there is a problem in your area.

Should your business prepare?

Any business can prepare for business continuity, but most don’t even consider it. Ask yourself “would my business suffer if it had no internet for one week?”

If yes, then you need to prepare! Remember, ISPs do not guarantee uptime or fault-free internet access.

What are the options?

  1. A separate internet line.
It sounds crazy to install a different internet line with a different provider. However, not all providers have the same faults and we always recommend this to businesses with critical systems. It has worked for countless businesses, including ours!
  2. 3G / 4G USB Dongles.
For short term solutions, your business can keep various pre-paid dongles with companies such as Vodafone or O2. They are not ideal but at least you can get online until your internet connection is restored.
