Athletes ready to line up for popular Sprint Triathlon

BACK FOR its second year, the popular Sprint Triathlon will take place on April 24 at Saddleworth Pool and Leisure Centre, where athletes will swim 400m, cycle 20k and complete a 5k run through Uppermill, Diggle, Delph, Scouthead, Austerlands, Lees, Grotton, Lydgate, and Grasscroft.

Why not enter a relay team? Simply identify your swimmer, cyclist and runner to compete for the team prize.

Early bird entry prices are also on offer to runners wanting to get involved in the Milltown Race Series for 2016 and Oldham Community Leisure (OCL) is stepping up its training series to help beginners get started for the Milltown Race Series for 2016.

The Milltown Race Series will kick off with the 7k on Sunday, May 15, followed by the 10k event on Father’s Day, Sunday June 19, and finally the annual Milltown to Moors half marathon on Sunday, October 16.

OCL, which manages the events, is offering a discount for runners taking part in all three running events. OCL and affiliated members pay just £40, with all others paying just £45. But the offer is only available until entries close for the 7k, and with the half marathon sold out in 2015 and its popularity growing, you would be wise to book your places soon!

OCL is expanding its beginner group training sessions to enable even more people to get involved.  Sessions already take place every Tuesday and Thursday from 6pm-7pm at Radclyffe Athletics Centre, and OCL will be adding to these in the new year, with run groups starting from other OCL facilities.

Race Director Alan Keane, senior health and physical activity development officer at Oldham Community Leisure, said: “We see a significant rise in new runners each January so we will continue to hold the two, weekly sessions at Radclyffe where beginners can meet others and will be supported by instructors in a safe, friendly environment.

“Their first goal will be to join the community in a 5k park run at Alexandra Park before, if they wish, building up to the 7k, 10k and finally the half marathon.”

Experienced runners are also welcome to join the sessions at Radclyffe Athletics Centre, in addition to a Wednesday night intermediate group from Oldham Leisure Centre at 6.30pm, which runs between four and five miles each week.  The running group sessions are free to OCL members and just £1 for people with an OCL Active card.
