THE end to the season was mired in controversy for Saddleworth ‘B’ in the Oldham and Rochdale Badminton League.
Saddleworth ‘B’ thought they had it all to play for and a top-three finish was seemingly within their grasp.
Their opponents in the final round of division three fixtures was Alpha ‘C’ who they had beaten 15-3 earlier in the season.
The away game was no such formality as Saddleworth ‘B’ lost 10-8 as it proved a disappointing end to their debut season.
To further add insult to injury and somewhat controversially the two games Saddleworth ‘B’ had in hand, forfeited by opponents earlier in the season, were left null and void.
The committee decided that as the second placed team in the third division was 52 points clear, determining the so called ‘dead’ fixtures would be of no benefit.
The controversy was Saddleworth ‘B’ were in a tightly packed bunch of five teams with no more than 15 points between them.
Saddleworth ‘B’ may not have won the two outstanding fixtures but had they been awarded 18-0 scores, owing to the fact their opponents cancelled both times, Saddleworth could have been propelled to third.
As it stands the ‘B’ team was outraged that in the final standings they finished second from bottom out of eight teams.
With their season all but over Saddleworth ‘A’ welcomed struggling Alpha ‘B’ to Saddleworth School. The match was a formality and a 16-2 win wouldn’t save Alpha from the drop or make a difference to Saddleworth’s league position.
Neil Mills, Mike Ablott and Nick Roe won all their games in a routine victory and a welcome way to end the season after promotion hopes were dashed with three matches to go.
What is clear in the 2018/19 season is the second half r for both the ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams was not strong enough to bring success to Saddleworth.
