A KIND-HEARTED Uppermill baker gave a five-year-old a birthday treat to remember as she sent him not one but two personalised Spiderman cakes.

But one of the cakes made by Kerri Roberts, who owns Something Yummy Cakes, was a ‘fake cake’ for Theo Carnie to keep as he suffers from a rare disorder which means he cannot eat normal foods.
Theo, from Outlane in Huddersfield, has been fed on a nutritious formula via a tube into his bowel since being diagnosed with chronic intestinal pseudo obstruction at the age of three.
Yet the youngster, whose favourite chef is Jamie Oliver, loves to help his mum Verity bake and cook meals for the family – including the Christmas turkey.
And to give him a surprise after a long spell in hospital, Verity contacted Baking A Smile, a charity which takes requests for cakes for seriously ill children and finds a registered baker near their area to donate the treat.
She said: “Theo has had a really tough year and spent a lot of time in Great Ormond Street Hospital and he had come home from a ten-week spell there.
“We just wanted to make his birthday special and Kerri helped us to do that. It’s something I couldn’t have done myself.
“Even though Theo couldn’t eat the cake himself he was so proud when he was handing it out to everyone – and we’ve still got the fake cake in our living room.”
Through Baking A Smile, almost 100 children have received cakes for their birthdays as kind-hearted bakers help make their day extra special.
Verity added: “It is through special people like Kerri that we can do things like this for our children. If you saw the look on their faces, you’ll know what it means and the difference it makes.”
Kerri, who came up as a match after signing up to help the charity earlier this year, said: “It was so nice to do something for Theo and give him a fake cake for him to keep too.”
