BRASS LOVERS no longer have to wait for Whit Friday to hear sweet notes from their favourite bands in the air…
Because Uppermill Conservative Club is throwing open its doors on Sunday afternoons from 2-4pm to let visiting bands perform to eager audiences.
This month already, Dobcross Brass Monkeys and Uppermill Band have both set up shop in the garden to entertain for the two-hour slot.
And more performances are scheduled for the coming months, with bands travelling from far and wide, as well as local villages, to have their turn.
Belle Vue Band will play on September 20, followed by a double dose of Friezland Band on November 15 for Remembrance then their Christmas Concert on December 20.
The brass afternoons were launched earlier this spring and Yvonne, from the Conservative Club, said they have gone down a treat with customers.
“The locals love it! They flood in to listen,” she said. “It’s even better when we can go outside in the garden when the weather is nice.
She added: “The bands are great – they don’t ask us for a fee, they do it out of the goodness of their hearts.
“We do what we can to help with a raffle but it’s down to the community who really support them.”
Doreen Whitehead, whose daughter Deborah Lawlor plays for Dobcross Brass Monkeys, is a regular at the events.
She said: “I’ve come with my three neighbours and we come as often as we can. We follow the bands all over – we love them!”
A programme of events for next year will be put together from February and will be available on the Conservative Club notice board.
Other exciting events at the Club include live music nights, a weekly quiz and meetings for numerous local groups and societies.
