Cycle mechanic expands popular business off-road with new shop

A POPULAR bicycle mechanic is expanding his mobile business off-road to keep up with demand from his impressed customers.

Paul Smith opened the doors of his Cycle Tech Oldham shop, on Ripponden Road, in July after a year of travelling around the borough to help clients.

Now, as well as offering bicycle servicing and repairs on the go, he has a store stocked from floor to ceiling with a vast array of bikes, accessories and more.

Paul, who will be Fox Suspension approved from October, explained: “I just used to be mobile but customers kept asking why I didn’t have a shop and said I should open one before someone else did!

“I designed the shop around what I remember of bike shops when I was a kid, with tyres hanging down and all sorts of accessories on sale.

“It has really taken off and I have a lot of customers from Saddleworth already, including the local cycling club Saddleworth Clarion whose members have supported me from day one.

“Feedback has been great so far and now I just want to let more people know where the new shop is and what I offer.”

An impressive range of bikes costing from £50 to £6,500 is on sale or to hire in conjunction with Bike Swanky, with road, mountain and hybrid the most popular.

Any extra items needed can also be snapped up, with everything from maps, gloves and cleaning products to baskets, seats and tyres on sale.

And Paul will soon be launching an online shop where shoppers can purchase bikes and accessories, then pick it up ready to go, including a first service free.

Paul, who lives in Moorside with his wife and two young sons, added: “I used to work for a recovery company and we were doing up to 200 breakdowns a day.

“I wanted to do something that would let me spend more time with my family and so started off doing mobile bike repairs, but it’s just snowballed from there.

“We’ve even had customers coming in to rent bikes while they are over from Canada and Switzerland!

“The electric bikes are popular too, as they have pedal assist which is good for the hills around here,” continued Oldham Mountain Rescue Team member Paul.

“I have one customer who cycles to work so it was perfect for him so he doesn’t arrive in the office too sweaty.”
