A PACKED programme of festive fun will entertain shoppers in Oldham town centre this weekend as ‘Brass Monkeys’ returns.

On Saturday, December 5 eight of the best bands around take to the stage on the High Street and Yorkshire Street to play Christmas favourites and popular songs.

Listen out for nine times National Champions and 16 times British Open champions The Fairey Band; The Baghdaddies, a ‘Balkanistic’ boogie band who mix Middle Eastern rhythms with Caribbean grooves and Geordie humour; and Oompah Brass, an award-winning brass ensemble performing Bavarian-style reworking of pop classics.

There will also be performances from Greenfield Brass Band, Baked A La Ska, The Delph Band, Dobcross Brass Monkeys and Oldham Music Service at the free event from 11am-4pm.

As well as all that brass the town centre Chaplaincy will be carol singing outside the Spindles Town Square from 1.40pm to 2pm.

On Yorkshire Street, in the town’s Independent Quarter, there will be a local producer’s vintage market offering a vibrant mix of goods from local and specialist traders.

There is also a host of free festive fun taking place across the town centre including children’s face painting and balloon modelling in Tommyfield from 11am until 3pm; and family arts and crafts for four to 10 year olds at Gallery Oldham from noon until 4pm. No need to book, just drop-in and enjoy.

Councillor Eddie Moores, Oldham Council’s Deputy Cabinet Member for Economy and Enterprise, said “This will be the third year we’ve held Brass Monkeys as it has proved to be very popular in the past.

“The sound of brass bands helps to get people in the Christmas spirit as they shop for presents.”

Shoppers can enjoy free parking for up to three hours at all Oldham Council town centre car parks at weekend. You must take a ticket from the machine and display it in your vehicle.
