Here, they look at how first impressions in the property market really do count

A LARGE number of home buyers do actually decide on whether to view a house on its curb appeal.

So the first time they see the outside of your property really does matter.

You can make sure they do want to view the inside of your house by ensuring you spend some time and effort improving the outside.

Here are a few hints and tips, which will cost very little but will certainly improve the curb appeal of your house:

  • Clean windows and gutters
  • Mow the lawn and remove weeds
  • Power wash flags and decking
  • Remove debris
  • Repaint the front door and polish the hardware
  • Hang a seasonal hanging basket by the front door
  • Install a front decorative security light
  • Make sure garden gates open and close properly
  • Add pots with flowers or shrubs
  • Don’t forget to tidy the rear garden, trim the lawn, move old toys, bikes etc
  • Clean up the garden furniture

Now for the interior of your house:

  • Finish off any outstanding DIY jobs – part completed jobs can really put off potential buyers
  • De-clutter – viewers don’t want to see your old newspapers, dirty washing, pet bowls and litter trays etc
  • Don’t leave personal items on show – people like to visualise their own things in the property
  • If you feel the house could do with a little internal decorating, keep it neutral, preferably in a light colour, and touch up chipped paintwork
  • Don’t forget to dust and polish.
  • Take out some furniture – sometimes too much furniture can make a room feel smaller and cluttered

Finally, a few personal touches we would always suggest are to put out fresh towels in the bathrooms, change bedding and add some co-ordinating accessories.  And fresh flowers always look and smell attractive.
