Britain’s Got Talent stars to switch on Oldham’s Christmas Lights

BRITAIN’S GOT Talent singing stars Bars and Melody will be the special guests at Oldham’s Christmas lights switch-on on Sunday, November 16.

The free family-favourite event, organised by the Oldham Town Centre Business Partnership, starts from noon with a Christmas Market on High Street, including a small children’s funfair and hot food stalls.

The Town Centre mascots Ollie and Millie will also be around handing-out free hats and sweets to children and singer Naomi, who went to school in Oldham, will also perform.

They will then join talented duo Bars and Melody – also known as Charlie Lenehan and Leondre Devries – and the Mayor of Oldham Councillor Fida Hussain on stage to switch on the Christmas lights before a huge fireworks display.

Councillor Jean Stretton, Oldham Council’s Cabinet Member for Town Centres, Culture and Tourism, said: “The Christmas lights switch on is always one of the highlights of the year in the town centre.

“This year we’ve got Bars and Melody to help carry out the switch on and the fireworks display will be as spectacular as ever – and it’s all free.

“The event provides the perfect end to a day of Christmas shopping in the town centre.”

The stage show starts at 4.45pm and lasts around an hour while the fireworks display starts at around 5.30pm.

This year, due to work transforming the Old Town Hall into a cinema, the stage show will take place behind Tommyfield Market, with entertainment from 1.30pm.

The town centre’s nativity scene will also move to a new location this year on High Street. After the switch-on, the Christmas lights will be illuminated daily from 2pm.

And this year the Oldham Town Centre Partnership has teamed up with Thomas Cook and Revolution 96.2 to give one lucky family the chance to meet Santa in Lapland.

As well as return flights for a family of four, the prize includes thrilling reindeer and husky sleigh rides, a gift for the kids and time to explore Santa’s enchanting village.
