A BUSINESS champion is celebrating a successful first 12 months helping to promote and support the best companies and organisations across the borough.
Last March, Richard Taylor, 45, launched ‘The Best of Oldham’, which pledges to “work in partnership with businesses to develop and market them both online and offline’’.
Now, he is assisting 29 businesses and organisations across Oldham, including 14 in the Saddleworth area.
All the businesses and organisations involved with Best of Oldham are listed on its website, accompanied with a detailed ‘profile’ on what they offer, along with ‘reviews’ and ‘blog posts’.
The scheme has been running nationally for more than ten years, with neighbours Rochdale and Bury also adopting the scheme so it can ‘’work in the community for the community’’.
Richard, who opted for a career change after working for Parkin Fabrics, works closely with businesses to offer individual marketing strategies that can range from social media to a traditional website, to help attract custom.
He said: “It is the best thing I’ve ever done. It’s where I thought it would be – bringing businesses together for the community.
“Towards the end of 2014 I had businesses contacting me, so it’s doing really well and I’m very happy running it. I have even been referred to as a stalwart of the community!’’
One business which has received help from the Best of Oldham is Uppermill’s Paul’s Quality Meats – and owner Paul revealed he is delighted with the service.
Paul said: “It’s a very good thing – I’ve had nothing but good feedback. It’s actually an honour to be part of ‘Best of Oldham’.
‘’We have been in Uppermill for 35 years now, but we know we have to move with the times. It’s good to get put across social media.
‘’It’s much more than just advertising the business – ‘Best of Oldham’ tells people who we are and what we do.
“We recently told people about a recipe for Lamb hotpot, from our own Micklehurst Lamb, and will be helping people with what to put on barbecues over the summer.”
