SEVENTY-ONE candles will shine in Uppermill as a vigil is held to mark Hiroshima Memorial Day on Tuesday, August 9.
The vigil, organised by Saddleworth Peace Group, will take place outside the Methodist Church at 7pm and it will also mark the 71st anniversary of the bombing of Nagasaki.
Special guests the Mayor of Oldham Councillor Derek Heffernan and the Mayoress Di Heffernan will be in attendance, along with speakers.
On August 6, 1945 the US dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima in Japan and then three days later a stronger atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki.
About 30 per cent of Nagasaki, including almost all the industrial district, was destroyed and nearly 74,000 people were killed and a similar number injured.
