A UNIQUE cloud-based internet radio station has been launched in Saddleworth to take the community into the digital age.
Billed as “the eye that never sleeps”, saddleworthfm.com will broadcast 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
It will major on local news, information, highlight community issues and play a mix of music from the 60s, 70s and 80s.
Journalist Ken Bennett, the station’s head of news and programmes, is backed in the ambitious venture by IT expert Dave MacDougall from Grasscroft.
Saddleworth FM can be enjoyed on a smartphone, iPad, laptop or tablet and will broadcast to all the villages from a studio in Dobcross.
Ken said: “Saddleworth deserves its own radio station focussing totally on important local issues mostly ignored by regional and state broadcasters and commercial radio stations strangled by advertising.
“With being based in the cloud, saddleworthfm.com will keep listeners up to date with the news wherever they are – in fact anywhere where there is an internet signal.
“And if you’re on holiday anywhere in the world or working abroad you can still be hear what’s going on back in Saddleworth.”
The station features a weekday Good Morning Saddleworth Breakfast Show with The Home Run, focussing on drive time listeners and the overnight Slow Train show plays seven nights a week.
The station will highlight local musicians and is looking to recruit DJs to drive specialist shows.
“We will showcase the very best of Saddleworth’s talent and a regular stream of local news as it happens, local events and happenings,” Ken added.
