OLDHAM COUNCIL is seeking caring residents who could provide a home for a child who is waiting for a new family.
The local authority hopes National Adoption Week, which runs from November 3 to 9, will provide inspiration for more people to come forward.
Councillor Amanda Chadderton, Cabinet Member for Education and Safeguarding, said: “National Adoption Week is an excellent opportunity to remind people that children across Oldham and the North West are still waiting for a caring family.
“Oldham’s biggest challenge is finding adoptive families for youngsters who have waited the longest – older children, brothers and sisters, children with disabilities and children of dual heritage and those from ethnic minorities.
“Despite our best efforts this is a continuing challenge. If you have ever thought about adoption, please get in touch.”
Meanwhile, Oldham Council held a special celebration night at the White Hart Inn, Lydgate, to say thank you to its foster carers.
They were recognised for their valuable contribution helping the borough’s most vulnerable children and young people.
Councillor Amanda Chadderton, Cabinet Member for Education and Safeguarding, said: “I’d like to thank each and every one of our carers for all their hard work and dedication – they really do make a difference to the lives of children.”
The night was attended by the Mayor of Oldham Councillor Fida Hussain, who presented carers with long service awards.
Special recognition was given to Glenys and Harold Cockcroft who have been fostering for Oldham Council for 30 years and have looked after more than 150 babies and young children.
The couple has received MBEs in recognition of their service to children and young people.
Oldham Fostering Service would like to hear from anyone who wants to become an adopter or foster carer.
You can apply regardless of marital status, sexuality, race or religion, or whether you are in work or have a disability.
All the council asks is that adopters are over 21 and have a spare bedroom.
Prospective adopters will receive a place on adoption preparation groups, fast track assessments, and ongoing training and support.
Carers receive training and support, plus payments and allowances of up to £450 per week (dependent on skills and experience).
