THE FINAL stage of refurbishment to Churchill Playing Fields is underway and expected to be completed by the end of July.
Major work to improve the drainage of the 7.8-hectare site – the largest in the Saddleworth and Lees area – began in February 2012 but has been disrupted by bad weather.
New changing rooms are also being completed thanks to funding from local sporting organisations, £60,000 from the Saddleworth and Lees District Partnership, £180,000 from the Football Foundation, £50,000 from Rugby Football League.
Funds are being sought to refurbish the tennis courts for use as a multi-games area for sports such as basketball and netball.
Councillor Barbara Beeley, Chair of the Saddleworth and Lees District Partnership, said: “With the refurbishment of the changing rooms and, hopefully, the tennis courts we shall have one of the best sporting hubs in the Borough.”
