HAILSTONES AND biting cold did not stop colourful clog and garland dancers from taking to the streets of Uppermill for their annual day of dance.

The Saddleworth Clog and Garland Dancers launched their tradition with lively dances in front of the Uppermill Park and Library as an admiring audience watched on.
Joining them were special guests Sowerby Bridge Morris and Chorlton Cloghoppers with traditional dances, as well the Rhubarb Tarts with their colourful Cotswolds-style dances.
And there was a first ever outing for Hexadaisy Morris, who brought bells galore and flashing white scarves to the event.
They all braved the cold and elements for the morning show before returning again in the afternoon to dance outside The Hare and Hounds pub and Uppermill Conservative Club.
Sarah Hardacre, Saddleworth Clog and Garland Dancers treasurer, said: “Between the five groups we offer a bit of everything from all the styles and dances in the North West.
“It’s lovely to bring all that together and we won’t be stopped by the weather!”
The Saddleworth Clog and Garland Dancers dance traditional North West clog stepping, and their history is based on mill girls who used to dance to celebrate the wakes.
They practice every Monday night 8pm-10pm at the Ebenezer Congregational Church in Uppermill. For more information email: saddleworthclog@gmail.com or find them on Facebook.
