UPPERMILL METHODIST Church is hosting a variety of events for parishioners and the community to help celebrate their joint centenary and bi-centenary.
This year marks 200 years since the first church ever built on the site opened on October 13, 1813, and 100 years since the first service in the present building took place on February 22, 1913.
Celebratory events in April start with a production of “All Aboard the Fishy Tales” by Footprints Theatre at Delph Theatre on Saturday, April 20 at 2pm.
The show, suitable for all ages, is a colourful adaptation of stories from the Bible, Shakespeare and the English folk tradition.
The music for the production is written by the Ivor Novello award-winning songwriter who wrote ‘Bob the Builder!’
Adult tickets are £7 and concessions are £5, and can be purchased from The Little Shop, High Street, Uppermill, by emailing tickets@uppermillmethodistchurch.org.uk or phoning 01457 820709.
And then on Sunday, April 28 at 7.30pm there is ‘An evening with John Wesley’ as the legendary travelling preacher returns to Saddleworth – 233 years after his last visit.
Staged at Uppermill Methodist Church actor Mark Topping will perform as the charismatic clergyman, whom he has been touring as for seven years.
The drama looks at Wesley’s adventurous life, including his confrontations with the drunken mobs who were frequently stirred up to disrupt his preaching.
The Church of England priest spent 50 years travelling on horseback and preaching in the open air, and founded Methodism, which became a separate church after his death.
He visited Delph on April 7, 1780 and recorded in his journal: “I went to Delph, a little village upon the mountains, where a remarkable work of God is just broke out.”
Tickets cost £6 and are available by emailing: tickets@uppermillmethodist.org.uk or calling: 01457 820709.
