Community group unveils tasty traditional cook book

A MOUTH-WATERING recipe book crammed with local favourites and a dash of heritage ideas is bringing the sweet smell of success to a Saddleworth community group.

Committee member June Taylor volunteered to collect recipes and turn them into a smart, 30-page, easy-to-read booklet which is selling at £2.50 per copy.

Seven ladies contributed 30 recipes to the booklet, which can be purchased at the group’s meetings on the first Tuesday of each month at Austerlands Cricket Club.

Or get a copy at their coffee mornings on the third Thursday of the month at the Three Crowns, Scouthead, between 10.30am and 12.30pm.

June explained: “The book is made up of traditional and modern day recipes all tried and tested by the ladies of Scouthead and Austerlands passed down through the ages.

“It really is delicious,” she added.

Among the recipes are mincemeat cake, slow cooked beef, curried parsnip and apple soup, raspberry buns, weetabix cake and fruit tea bread.

Joan Sykes, the Scouthead and Austerlands community group chair, said: “The cook book is a really useful addition to a cook’s repertoire and helps keep local recipes alive.”
