Controversial MP George Galloway to appear in Dobcross to support brass band mission

CONTROVERSIAL MP George Galloway is to appear at a Dobcross pub to support a brass band’s mission to raise funds to travel to lay flowers at a war shrine.

The high profile politician, broadcaster and writer has been the Respect Party Member of Parliament for Bradford West for three years.

He will appear at the sold out private charity event under the banner of ‘An evening  with …’ at The Swan Inn, Dobcross on Wednesday, May 20.

The event has been organised by Peter Young, who is supporting The Dobcross Silver Band and its adult learners section, the Brass Monkeys, in their bid to travel to Ypres in Belgium in August.

The bands will play the Last Post and lay wreaths on behalf of the people of Saddleworth at the legendary Menin Gate.

Mr Young, from Delph, has a pedigree for organising high profile events and, with The Swan landlords  Tim Newbold and Michael Powis, has raised thousands for village projects.

Said Mr Young: “I was approached by band president John Holden, an old friend, and I was really struck by this venture and keen to help.

“The evenings have usually involved appearances from people I know in show business and theatre circles who I have worked with before.

“This time I decided to contact people who I didn’t know but thought would make for an interesting evenings entertainment.

“I contacted Mr Galloway, not for any political reasons, but because I knew he was an outstanding orator.

“He is a controversial character but without doubt a brilliant speaker and I though it would be interesting to hear what makes him tick and how he came to reach his position from humble beginnings in Dundee.

“George accepted my invitation immediately, and he will be appearing on Wednesday, May 20 headlined in ‘An Evening With George Galloway.'”

Mr Galloway has been promised traditional Saddleworth Fayre – potato pie and jam roly poly with custard and will forgo any fee to help the bands.

The George Galloway event is a private function and sold out.
