2015 marks the centenary of the Women’s Institute – and the Saddleworth branch is celebrating in style with various events throughout the year.
The first fundraising event was a UNIQUE Fashion show for ladies on Saturday, March 7 March at Greenfield Conservative club from 1pm, including stalls, tarot readings, a raffle and fashion.
Then there is an ‘Off the Rails Comedy Club’ night at the Royal George, Manchester Road, Greenfield, on Saturday, April 18. Tickets are available online from the Comedy Club, from the Royal George or at the WI monthly meetings.
At the WI’s February meeting they introduced their chosen charity for 2015 – Funky Fitness and Fun, based in Greenfield.
This is a non-profit making community group that promotes health and well-being for adults with additional and different needs and are currently raising funds for a much-needed minibus.
Guest speaker at the February meeting, Jo Briars of ‘Spread the Love’ discussed the history of preserving and why the WI became famous for it during WW2.
Jo talked about her inspiration to turn a hobby using seasonal fruits into an award-winning venture and brought along samples of her wonderful jams, chutneys and marmalades.
The Saddleworth WI meet on the first Wednesday of each month at the Saddleworth Hotel from 7.30pm. New members and guests are always welcome.

There is also a programme of monthly speakers and list of sub-groups, which include food and drink, cinema, theatre, book, singing, walking, handicraft and cake, and day trips.
