Convenience store is latest proposal at Denshaw hotel

A DENSHAW hotel that has been at the centre of much debate and conjecture could be home to a convenience store and coffee shop if planning permission is granted.

And those behind the scheme at what is known as Clough Manor believe it will be a ‘high-quality enhancement.’

Sophia Hartwell, of Saddleworth Holdings Ltd, has applied to Oldham Council to place the facilities in the existing car park of the Rochdale Road site, more recently known as W.Apart Hotel.

As well as the store and coffee shop, which would be called Coffee n Cake, there will be electronic vehicle charging bays, cycle charging points, a self-service car wash and a taxi call point.

Eight part-time jobs would be created and documents supporting the proposal state how they believe it will benefit the area.

They say: “This proposal represents a sustainable, high-quality enhancement to an existing commercial site.

“It provides essential rural services, promotes clean transport and supports the long-term operation of W Hotel as a rural hospitality landmark.

“The land is previously developed (brownfield) and no greenfield areas are affected. The site includes a right of way along the northern edge leading to existing houses, which will be fully retained. The area already accommodates built form, including the existing hotel, making this a logical extension of commercial use.”

They add it would provide support for local supply chains, in farm produce and bakery goods), an improved EV infrastructure for the area and an attraction for tourists, cyclists and business travellers.

What was Clough Manor has been at the centre of much local debate for some time.

Planning applications submitted in August and October to change parts of the hotel into a house in multiple occupation (HMO) and nine apartments are still officially listed as awaiting a decision.

Oldham Council’s planning committee will decide whether to grant or refuse permission for this latest application.
