Saddleworth Cricket club plans allotments and apiary

A SADDLEWORTH sports club hopes to bring ‘significant benefits’ to the area by installing allotments and an apiary.

People behind Saddleworth Cricket, Bowling and Tennis Club have applied to Oldham Council to place the extra facilities at its Greenfield base.

Situated next to the practice cricket net at the eastern end of the Calf Lane site, an area measuring 29 metres x eight metres will be converted.

Within a fenced area will be some allotment beds, beehives for the apiary will be placed at one end and a shed for storage.

And documents backing the application state: “Permission is sought for the fencing and shed as it is understood the beehives as portable and the allotment beds do not require permission.”

Saddleworth Cricket, Bowling and Tennis Club, which was former about 175 years ago, lies on green belt land in a flood zone three area, which is designated as having a high risk of flooding.

However, an assessment states: “The location of the proposed cabin is such that it is within an area where the risk from this source is at its lowest.

“Given the proposed elevation, and small footprint area of the proposed building it is considered that flood storage compensation will not be required.”

And documents add: “We consider that the proposal would not conflict with the purposes of the green belt in broad terms, subject to a detailed assessment.

“This proposal is considered to represent sustainable development. There will be no materially adverse impacts that outweigh the significant sustainable benefits that would be provided.”
