Councillor Jim McMahon and Carolyn Wilkins once more decided to give the money they will have spent – £175 each – to help families who are struggling to afford the basic necessities this Christmas.

Cllr McMahon said: “I’m delighted to again donate this money to Oldham Foodbank’s Christmas appeal.

“This should be a fantastic time of year but it is tough for so many people. We hope the donations will go some way to helping people in real need.”

Oldham Council staff and councillors have already donated hundreds of kilograms of provisions to the foodbank, including tinned food, biscuits, breakfast cereals and festive treats.

Donation stations were set up in council buildings across the borough, with many employees doing their bit and handing over non-perishable food.

Oldham Foodbank is run by a dedicated group of 30 part time volunteers from local churches and is based on Clegg Street, Oldham.

This year the local authority has worked closely with partners such as the Clinical Commissioning Group, Citizens Advice Bureau and Oldham Community Leisure to help increase the support given to the Foodbank during this busy period.

The council offers further support via the Employer Supported Volunteering (ESV) scheme which gives employees the opportunity to volunteer with groups in Oldham for up to three days.
