TWO SADDLEWORTH councillors are digging deep to help finance a World War One commemorative event in Dobcross.

Derek Heffernan and Garth Harkness are contributing to the ‘Lest we forget’ event at Holy Trinity Church on September 13, which will remember the Great War.

The evening will include music from Dobcross Youth Band, a song of peace from children, poems and footage from the war, and a service at 7.30pm  to remember the sacrifice of the many servicemen and women who served and gave their lives.

An exhibition of memorabilia from the War is being put together and it is hoped it will run throughout the weekend.

Cllr Heffernan said “An important part of conveying the message will be the ability to show video footage and photographic stills and this costs money but it is important event we want to make sure happens.”

Cllr Harkness added “We need to remember those who fell and understand the reality of the war to ensure we learn lessons.

“The current conflicts in Gaza show the catastrophic effects of war. Events like this are important in helping us remember and reflect on the realities of war.”
