Cup success for Saddleworth School

SADDLEWORTH SCHOOL secured a hat trick of rugby victories in the Oldham Schools’ Cup.

There were wins for the year 11, 10 and eight teams at Manor Park which hosted the five finals.

Without doubt Saddleworth’s year 11 team took centre stage producing a stunning late fight back to defeat Newman Academy 38-24.

It looked as though Newman would triumph as they were 24-16 ahead with only 10 minutes left until Saddleworth produced a remarkable finish in which they scored 22 unanswered points to snatch victory.

The tries came from centre Darryl Shaw, Reece Travis, Sam Ogden and Olly Russell while Liam Aspin kicked two conversions and Russell one as Saddeleworth secured their fourth Oldham Schools’ Cup in five years in this age category.

Saddleworth’s earlier touchdowns came from Sam Ogden, Tom Howe, Aspin and Sammy Ireland as they had held an 18-16 interval lead.

SUPER SHOW: Year 10 rugby team

There was a triumph for the year 10 rugby team as a superb individual display from Liam Aspin masterminded a 23-4 victory against Failsworth in the Oldham Schools’ Cup.

Aspin scored a hat trick of tries, two conversions and a drop goal as he finished with an individual points total of 19.

There was also a try for winger Jack Kelly as Saddleworth produced a storming second-half display as the scores had been tied 4-4 at half time.

And there was also success for year eight as Saddleworth defeated Crompton House 24-4.

There were two tries apiece for Josh Yarwood and Sam Thackeray and one for Robbie Coates while Brandon Turner landed two conversions.

Meanwhile, the year eight football team lost 4-2 to Blue Coat in the Oldham Schools’ League Final.

Saddleworth had been been bidding to complete a double having already won the Oldham Schools’ Cup.

Joe Ireland and Brandon Halliwell were the scorers for Saddleworth who had more possession and chances, but lacked a clinical cutting edge.

It has been a great year for year eight football team which also reached the fourth round of the English Schools’ Cup.
