Delph and Denshaw flower shows are a bloomin’ success once more

GREEN-FINGERED locals flocked to two popular village flower and home produce shows as the annual events proved as popular as ever.

At the Denshaw flower and home produce show residents turned out in force to show off their products at the Village Hall after an excellent year of growing.

Committee member David Wheeler explained: “None of the entries are pre-booked so we can only hope on the day that people will continue to exhibit.

“Once again I was amazed at what the people of Denshaw and surrounding area have produced for our show.”

Alongside the horticultural exhibits – boasting everything from flowers to fruit and vegetables – was the home produce section with a tasty selection of cakes and jams.

And for budding growers, there were children’s classes, including a new special prize for the best Flower pot man.

In keeping with tradition, councillor John Hudson presented the cups to the winners and held a lively auction of the products to raise funds for next year’s show.

Meanwhile, at the Delph Club, another host of growers put their flowers, fruit and vegetables, and home produce before the judges in around 60 categories.

Exhibits included everything from giant vegetables and bright plants and flowers to delicate paintings and carvings and mouth-watering breads and cakes.

And another ten sections specifically for children produced a bright array of entries including flower pot men, decorated eggs and gingerbread men.

The event was organised by new committee members Gilbert Symes, Pam Preston, Cllr Nikki Kirkham and Natalie Dunn.

Gilbert, chair of the committee, said: “We’ve had a lot of entries and we’ve been really busy. We’re delighted with the response.”

Prizes were awarded by Saddleworth Parish Council chairman Cllr Neil Allsopp before exhibits were auctioned off and a raffle was held.
