A WALKING guidebook exploring the magnificent countryside in and around Saddleworth has been published by a local outdoor enthusiast.
Chris Maylor offers 20 routes in his book ‘Saddleworth Discovery Walks’ which delve into the history, people and landscape of the area.
Each walk also includes an illustrated map and a selection of stunning black and white landscape photographs taken by locally acclaimed photographer Ray Green.
There is also a foreword by local professional climber and mountaineer, Kevin Thaw, who cut his teeth wandering Saddleworth’s vast network of footpaths and climbing its challenging crags.
Chris explained: “This unique book is suitable for walkers, climbers, fell-runners and anyone who has an interest in Saddleworth’s rich history.
“I hope readers will be tempted to lace-up their walking boots and explore every corner of this wonderful region.”
Chris, who was raised on a farm in Saddleworth and is a member of Saddleworth Runners, runs a Saddleworth Discovery Walks website and leads guided tours of the area.
He revealed he was excited to expand his ways of sharing local walks by taking on his first guidebook writing venture.
“I have always had a passion for the outdoors, with a particular interest in walking, fell running and cycling,” he said.
“I have been lucky enough to travel the world and have visited some amazing places and met many wonderful people.
“However, my love for the hills, valleys and moors, in and around Saddleworth, which I developed as a young boy, has never waned.
“The area’s never-ending swathes of moorland and beautiful valleys are criss-crossed by a vast network of footpaths, bridleways and ancient packhorse trails, providing virtual unrestricted access to the wonderful landscape of the South Pennine Moors.”
