The book, and the original BBC film on which it is based, were all produced by John Matthews, who has travelled the globe with his company Bigger Picture Films.

It looks at motor rallying’s craziest years and includes interview transcripts, including World Champions Ari Vatanen, Walter Rohrl, Stig Blomqvist and many more.

John donated the books to Age UK Oldham’s store in Uppermill, where they were received by delighted retail manager Kathryn Hamer and shop manager Joanne Chapman.

The signed books will be available to purchase for £3 at any of Age UK Oldham’s ten stores across the borough, from Uppermill to Failsworth, and make an ideal gift for Father’s Day.

“The books are brand new and worth a lot of money,” said John. “I just want to help the shop –  it’s a great branch and does a great service. I often by books and DVDs there.

“I don’t think all of us do anywhere near enough to help other people. It is very easy in this modern world of ours to become very selfish.

“This is not a massive thing for me to do but it is something and it will generate some much-needed money for an important cause.”

John added: “‘Madness on Wheels’ is without doubt one of the best films we have made at Bigger Picture and it received rave reviews.

“We had over twenty hours of interviews for the film and we only used a fraction of them. What we have in the book is all of the main interviews with minimal, if any, editing.

“We have recorded one – if not the most – exciting and important times the world of motorsport has ever seen. I wanted to put that down for history and record it forever.”
