Election in Greenfield after veteran councillor steps down

AN election will be held to find a new Saddleworth Parish Councillor for Greenfield after Mavis Bingley stood down due ill health.

Veteran councillor Mrs Bingley, 86, handed in her resignation on November 8, opening up the casual vacancy on Saddleworth Parish Council.

Nomination papers must be delivered by Monday, December 16 and if the election is contested, the poll will take place on Thursday, January 16, 2025.

Saddleworth Civic Hall, Uppermill

Liberal Democrat Mrs Bingley, who lives in Grasscroft, represented the Greenfield Ward on Saddleworth Parish Council alongside Liberal Democrats Cllr Elizabeth Adamson and Cllr Jeff Garner and Labour’s Cllr Peter Walsh.

She was one of the first members of the Satellite Youth Centre Committee and is a former governor of St Mary’s School in Greenfield and St Anne’s school in Lydgate and was a Brownie Guide leader at Uppermill for 30 years.

Her community involvement and contribution earned her a special nomination and trip to Buckingham Palace for a Garden Party in 2005.

She wrote a book ‘My Life Story’, published by Age UK Oldham in 2015, to offer an insight into her memories and pictures from childhood to present.
