TWO COMPANIONS from Emmaus Mossley have completed a fact-finding mission to Germany to learn more about the charity’s international movement.
Gary Barton and Bruce Mercer went on a five-day visit to Emmaus Cologne, Germany to take part in a training course along with people from Emmaus communities across Europe.

They learned more about the movement’s founder Abbé Pierre, Emmaus Europe and Emmaus International.
The training covered different aspects of Emmaus, from its early beginnings in France after the Second World War to it becoming a global movement supporting people who have experienced social exclusion.
Gary said: “It was a really interesting few days and I learned so much about Emmaus and the fascinating city of Cologne.
“I enjoyed meeting people from other Emmaus communities from across Europe and hearing their perspective on things.”
As well as the training, Bruce and Gary explored the city of Cologne, visiting the cathedral, NS Documentation Centre and the Kolumba Museum.
Bruce also took part in a soup run organised by Emmaus Cologne to support street homeless people in the city.
He commented: “We got a wonderful warm welcome from all the community members. I learned a load more about the international Emmaus movement and it was a real eye-opening visit.”

Emmaus Mossley supports 24 formerly homeless people – companions – by providing them with a home and work in a community setting.
The charity runs a social enterprise in Mossley, selling donated and upcycled furniture, household goods and vintage wares.
