Emmaus Mossley hosts ‘Hats Off’ charity event

A UNIQUE ‘HATS OFF’ event at Emmaus Mossley give customers the chance to bag collectables and rare vintage wares that often don’t make it to the shop-floor.

More than 200 supporters came together to celebrate all things Emmaus Mossley – a charity that supports formerly homeless people – at the sale of interesting and unique donations usually saved for display and hire.

Items included Ercol furniture, clothes and shoes, collectables, musical instruments and records, vintage tools, mirrors, vases and decorations, and lots of hats.

There was also a display and sale of a ‘vintage’ themed wedding, a charity auction, music and tea, coffee and cakes.

One of the items auctioned off on the night, a vintage Singer Sewing Chair, raised an impressive £200 for the charity.

Hazel Hodkinson, Shop Manager at Emmaus Mossley, said: “We are often approached by TV, film and theatre producers for unique props and items to use in their productions.

“Our ‘Hats Off to Emmaus’ charity event aimed to give our regular customers and supporters a chance to purchase some of these weird and wonderful items that are not normally for sale.”

Dennis Morton, a companion at Emmaus Mossley who helped to organise the event, said: “The event was fantastic – everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and I’ve had a lot of people asking when the next one will be. The atmosphere was buzzing and it was great to be part of it.”

Ali Hill, Director at Emmaus Mossley, added: “The event was a great success and we would like to thank everyone who came along on the night to support Emmaus Mossley.

“A lot of work went into the planning and preparation but we are delighted with how it went. We still have a number of displays up in the shop and hope to run another evening event sometime in the autumn.”

Meanwhile, ten companions from Emmaus Mossley were recognised for their achievements in a variety of adult learning courses at Tameside College.

They were presented with certificates after taking part in courses including NVQ Level 2 Customer Service, Warehousing and Driver Training.

“I wish to thank the staff at Tameside College for their support and bespoke training that has had a visible impact on our companions as well as the running of Emmaus Mossley.”

Volunteers at Emmaus Mossley also received their share of recognition for their contribution during Volunteers’ Week 2015.

Brenda Cricket started volunteering at Emmaus Mossley more than 12 years ago and is now its longest serving volunteer.

She said: “It is a pleasure to work alongside people who have vision and hope. I hope I speak for all the volunteers by saying we simply try to make things better.”
