TWO Saddleworth rugby league prospects have received the call to represent their country.
Fenton Rogers and Tom Whitehead have both been picked for England’s Under-16 squad to play Test matches against France.
The Saddleworth School pupils, who both came through at Saddleworth Rangers, are in line to play at the home of Super League clubs Hull KR and Wakefield Trinity on Wednesday, July 17 and Saturday, July 20.
Fenton, who is signed on to Huddersfield Giants, and Tom, who is part of Warrington Wolves’ set-up, play for Saddleworth School’s Year 11 side.
That won the North West title in the Champions Schools tournament in April by beating Wade Deacon High school of Widnes 22-4 at Wigan’s Robin Park Arena.
However, it suffered disappointment in the National Schools competition by losing 30-16 to Outwood Grange of Wakefield, West Yorkshire, in the semi-finals.
Despite that, Fenton and Tom will work under head coach Danny Wilson and his staff, which includes Super League legend, Oldham’s Paul Sculthorpe.
A Rugby Football League spokesman said: “England Youth team offers a well-established pathway to the elite level, via the England Academy system.
“Both are incorporated within the RFL’s England Performance Unit (EPU) which aims to develop more world-class England players for all senior squads by 2021.”
