Walkers tackling the Saddleworth Three Peaks for Mahdlo

DETERMINED walkers took on 15 miles of Saddleworth hills and countryside to raise £13,000 for Mahdlo Youth Zone.

216 participants completed the Saddleworth Three Peaks challenge, taking in the moors as well as Pots and Pans, Indian’s Head and Wharmton Hill.

The money raised will be used to support Mahdlo projects, providing opportunities to young people across Oldham and the surrounding area.

Chris Wareing, Chairman of the Board at Mahdlo, said: “It was an absolutely incredible day.

“Everyone from the individuals to the businesses who have taken part have really thrown themselves into the challenge and raised an unbelievable amount to support young people in Oldham.

“I want to say a huge thank you to every single person involved. Mahdlo could not do what it does best without them.”

The trek began at The Royal George in Greenfield where walkers enjoyed a bacon sandwich before heading out over the hills towards the peaks, stopping for lunch at The Cross Keys above Uppermill.

The route was not for the faint-hearted but walkers were rewarded with some incredible views of the countryside.

Claire Crossfield, Development Manager at Mahdlo, added: “We owe a huge thanks to Oldham Mountain Rescue for supporting the event year on year and being on hand if we ever need them.

“I also want to say a huge thanks to the team at The Royal George and Cross Keys for supporting the event with their hospitality.

“Here’s to next year being even bigger and even better!”

The date for next year’s Saddleworth Three Peaks challenge has been set as July 4, 2020.

Mahdlo is also looking to get a group together to take on the Yorkshire Three Peaks or the National Three Peaks (Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon). If you are interested email Claire.Crossfield@mahdloyz.org for more information.
