THERE HAS been a lot of hype recently about wearing an SPF every day to reduce the effects of photodamage on the skin, and we get asked a lot in both the salon and clinic if this applies to us in the UK.
This is one instance where you can believe the hype. The process of photoageing refers to damage and ageing caused by intense and chronic exposure to sunlight, specifically UVA and UVB rays.
Accounting for the majority of age-associated changes in the appearance of the skin, UVA and UVB rays cause damage such as coarseness, wrinkles, mottled pigmentation and sun spots, skin laxity, telangiectasia, and premalignant and malignant neoplasms.
Even though the UK, and in particular the North West of England, is not famous for its roaring temperatures and year-round sunshine, we still need to protect our skin.
It is important to understand the difference between UVA and UVB rays to fully appreciate the need for daily application of a quality SPF of at least 30 and above.
UVA rays account for 95 per cent of the UV radiation reaching the earth’s surface and they are present with relatively equal intensity during all daylight hours, not just when the sun is shining.
UVA rays are so powerful they can penetrate clouds and even glass, and so are a constant aggressor on the skin and can cause it to redden and burn.
So now we understand the need for year-round protection, what do we use?
Wearing a broad spectrum physical sunscreen of 30 plus is the best way to protect your skin. At Face and Body, both in the salon and clinic, we have several products that can offer a broad spectrum protection, from our established skincare houses Clarins and Guinot to our new cosmeceutical brands of Obagi, Medik8 and Elizabeth Arden Pro.
A product we are especially proud to work with is the Elizabeth Arden Pro Triple Action Protector (TAP) SPF 50. At only £59 TAP offers a broad spectrum physical protection against UVA, UVB and inferred, and is also packed with anti-oxidants and a patented DNA enzyme complex to protect from free radicals and support the skin’s own natural support system.
This ground-breaking new anti-ageing product is clinically proven to reduce the visible effects of sun damage associated with skin aging and non-melanoma skin cancer and has been awarded the Skin Cancer Foundation’s Recommended Daily Use seal of approval.
If you would like any further information on the benefits of daily use of an SPF or to talk about the products most suited to your skin type and lifestyle, please call into the salon or clinic where one of our fully trained therapists / aestheticians will be happy to help.
