WHAT’S IN a name? Ardent followers of Latics will know their original name was Pine Villa. It changed before they entered the league in 1907.
Equally certain for football lovers from this area we all know Manchester United were Newton Heath until 1903 and Manchester City were Ardwick until 1896. Other clubs have changed their names notably Leyton Orient who have been Clapton Orient, just Orient as well as Leyton Orient.
I give below a list of other clubs currently in the Football League who have changed their name since 1888 the year the league was formed.
1899 – Glossop dropped the North End suffix; 1901 Burton Swifts – Burton United (not the same base as Burton Albion the present club); Small Heath – Birmingham 1905; Woolwich Arsenal – Arsenal 1914; Leicester Fosse – Leicester City 1919; Rotherham County – Rotherham United and Stoke – Stoke City 1925; Birmingham – Birmingham City and Clapton Orient – Leyton Orient 1946.
Scunthorpe and Lindsey United dropped ‘and Lindsey’ 1958; Leyton Orient dropped Leyton 1967 to become just Orient; Hartlepools – Hartlepool 1968; Swansea Town – Swansea City 1970; Bournemouth and Boscombe – A.F.C. Bournemouth 1971; Hartlepool – Hartlepool United 1977; Orient – Leyton Orient 1987 and Wimbledon – M.K. Dons in 2004.
