HOMEOWNERS in Saddleworth were handed a new year present they did not want – floods.
Incessant rain on December 31 left many areas underwater, with the River Tame – which runs through many of the villages – swelling to the point of bursting its banks.
And a number of properties have been impacted by water, with reports of cellars being flooded.
Fire crews were called out to Delph New Road, which runs between Delph and Dobcross, after reports of flood damage, as well as the possibility of a sinkhole developing and the surface lifting.
That route remained closed well into New Year’s Day.
Other properties in Greenfield are thought to have been hit as levels rose amid the downpour.
Well-I-Hole Road may be closed for some time after it found itself under water – it is not much better nearby on Manchester Road, although that was just passable.
Saddleworth Cricket, Bowling and tennis Club reported seeing much of its wicket disappear while its bowling green was under a foot of water.
It was a similar story at nearby Greenfield Cricket Club, with a large area submerged as the river raged alongside.
Allotment owners in Uppermill found themselves part of a torrent as the river overflowed on to the land next to it.
Water levels are likely to remain high for the coming days as a clean-up operation begins.
