Fourth unofficial Beer Walk keeps tradition alive

WHAT DO 11 miles, 11 lobsters and beer in Saddleworth have in common?

Well, that’s what you get at the unofficial Beer Walk 2015.

A brother and sister from Saddleworth are keeping the popular tradition alive with their fourth unofficial event over the Whit Friday weekend.

Justin Brown, along with his sister Angie and nine other friends, took on the walk around Saddleworth dressed as bright red lobsters this year, each with tights and claws.

“It was ace. It’s always a laugh,” said Justin. “There were waltzers, robbers and a group even came as Deal or No Deal, complete with a Noel Edmunds.”

This tradition still brings together loyal followers who are determined to keep the community event going.

Around 200 locals turned up and raised £270 for the Saddleworth Round Table, making it the biggest since it was closed down, with the next one already planned for May 2016.

The Saddleworth Round Table decided to scrap the official beer walk, due to problems regarding the sheer number of people.

And with the number attending the unofficial walk rising from 120 last year, it is a worry for Justin too.

He said: “We are never going to give up this tradition, but we would like to keep it local. The problem is that if the Round Table runs it, they become accountable for everyone.

“There are also requirements that would call for 22 miles of fencing and portable toilets, making the event too much to handle.”
