The team at Apollonia House is getting behind Mouth Cancer Action Month this November to help check for symptoms of a disease that, without early detection, could claim 30,000 lives over the next decade.
Organised by the British dental Health Foundation and sponsored by Denplan, Mouth Cancer Action Month promotes the message ‘if in doubt, get checked out’ in a bid to save thousands of lives through early detection.
Apollonia House said: “Mouth cancer can often be spotted in its early stages by a dentist and, if caught early, there is a 90 per cent chance of survival.
“Dental teams are also in the ideal position to share information about the risks and symptoms of mouth cancer with their patients.
“With this in mind we are welcoming both existing patients and new patients of Apollonia House for a free mouth cancer check on Thursday and Fridays throughout November.
“The mouth cancer check will involve a soft tissue check as well as discussing any concerns the patient may have such as mouth ulcers that haven’t healed within three weeks, red or white patches or other unusual lumps or swellings in their mouth.”
Dr Nigel Carter OBE, Chief Executive of the British Dental Health Foundation added: “It is well documented that early detection saves lives.
“We are extremely grateful Apollonia House is offering free mouth cancer checks this November.
“The number of people diagnosed with mouth cancer in the UK has significantly increased over the last decade, with latest figures showing 6,767 new cases a year. This means it’s never been more important to follow the campaign message and take advantage of the free mouth cancer checks.”
