REVELLERS RAISED around £1,500 at an afternoon at the fair at Christ Church Hall in Freizland – despite the event being threatened after two promotional banners were stolen.

The banners went missing from Tesco, in Greenfield – one within 24 hours of being put up – and fair organiser Susan Beesley admitted she was concerned turn-out would be low.

But residents flocked to the annual event to take part in the games, raffle, tombola and stalls, as well as enjoying entertainment from Friezland Brass band and afternoon tea.

The fair was officially opened by the Mayor of Oldham John Hudson, who married his wife Kathleen at Friezland Church and is a councillor for Saddleworth South.

Said Susan: “We were so upset to see the banner taken not once but twice and were worried people may not have seen the event publicised.

“But we had wonderful support and it’s nice to see the event go well and raise funds for the community.”

Proceeds from the event go towards the upkeep of Christ Church and the church hall, which is used by community groups including musical, playgroups and yoga classes.
