Future of deli counter unknown with Tesco to confirm closures

TESCO staff have been left nervously waiting to find out if Greenfield’s deli counter will be closed.

The supermarket giant announced it was shutting 90 facilities around the country and vastly reducing the hours of others.

But the Independent has been told those working there are not likely to know if their store is one of the ones affected until a public announcement is made.

When approached in an attempt to find out if the store will lose its deli counter completely, a Tesco spokesman simply replied: “We have not yet released locations.”

Tesco will cut 9,000 jobs as part of its plan, which was announced in January and is designed to cut costs by up to £1.5 billion.

In a statement, Tesco said: “Not only are customers shopping in different ways but we know that they have less time available to shop too – which means they are using our counters less frequently.

“We will be making changes to the counters in our large stores to ensure that we have the right offer for customers.

“In our four years of turnaround we’ve made good progress but the market is challenging and we need to continually adapt to remain competitive and respond to how customers want to shop.

“We’re making changes to our UK stores and head office to simplify what we do and how we do it, so we’re better able to meet the needs of our customers.

“This will impact some of our colleagues and our commitment is to minimise this as much as possible and support our colleagues throughout.”

New of the possible closures, which may see people in Stalybridge lose their job, has not gone down well with trade unions.

Usdaw’s national officer Pauline Foulkes said: “This is devastating news for staff, who have played a crucial role in Tesco’s turnaround project, contributing to 12 successive quarters of growth, solid Christmas trading and over a billion pounds of profit.

“We will enter into consultation talks with Tesco, where we will examine the business case for their proposed changes.”
