Glittering prizes and performances fill Saddleworth School’s Annual Presentation Evening

GLITTERING PRIZES and performances filled The Queen Elizabeth Hall as pupils’ achievements were celebrated at Saddleworth School’s Annual Presentation Evening.

Students, staff, parents and governors gathered for the event along with special guests Saddleworth Parish Council chairman Neil Allsopp and chairman’s lady Carol Allsopp.

Certificates and trophies were handed out to hard-working pupils in Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 for their attainment, progress and effort.

Year 11 subject prizes and GCSE Examination certificates were also presented, along with a host of Duke of Edinburgh Awards at bronze and silver levels.

Two new subject prizes were presented, sponsored by long-serving governors Donald Clarke and John Broadbent as they stand down after dedicating decades to the school.

As well as academic success, the evening also celebrated the extra-curricular activities enjoyed by pupils with showcases of their talents.

‘Brass Xplosion’ conducted by Mr Beckwith played pieces including ‘Skyfall’ and ‘Colours of the Wind’ while Concert Band conducted by Mrs Pickett played ‘The Final Countdown’ and others.

Year 10 pupils Katie Agarwal, Katie Ball and Emma Gregory performed a contemporary dance while a moving duet was sung by Year 11 students Tessa King and Sinead Simpson.

Band ‘Petty Theft’, comprised of Year 11 pupils Leon Hurley, Sam Sumner and Jamie Walton, also took to the stage to perform.

And a variety of trips and activities enjoyed throughout the year were recalled by headteacher Matthew Milburn, as well as displays of videos and picture slideshows.

From German and French exchanges, science trips, art exhibits to fundraising, concerts and competitions, and the Leavers’ Prom, pupils have dived into all aspects of school life.

Sports brought record exam results along with success on the field with titles and cups clinched in football, rugby, basketball, netball, badminton, athletics, rounders and more.

And a new peer mentoring scheme has flourished to include around 50 students and antibullying ambassadors, helping win the school a Gold Healthy Schools Award.

Mr Matthew Milburn headteacher, said: “Ours is a great school and that is something that has been affirmed in the last year by Ofsted.

“I want to thank the staff and pupils who have helped our school to be rated so highly. It is immensely gratifying and the result of the hard work and staff and pupils put in together.

“It is a privilege to come to work everyday and be surrounded by such engaged and committed pupils and staff.

“Recent events in Paris remind us of the importance of education and the work we do.”
