Star guest Terry Waite launches Lucie’s Cafe at Emmaus Mossley as charity night raises £3,000

TERRY WAITE CBE was the star guest at a charity event to launch a new café at homeless charity Emmaus Mossley.

Humanitarian and author Terry joined visitors at a ‘memories’ themed event to celebrate all things Emmaus Mossley.

The evening event included a talk by Terry, vintage displays, a charity auction and the opening of Lucie’s Café, which is named after one of the founders of Emmaus in France.

For the event, companions – formerly homeless people who live and work at Emmaus – staff and volunteers handpicked the best vintage items and created unique displays to show off what Emmaus Mossley has to offer.

On the night, the charity raised £3,000 through the sale of items within the shop and the charity auction.

And a special presentation was made to Eileen Lees who is retiring after volunteering for the charity for more than 20 years.

Terry commented: “I was delighted to open the new café at Emmaus Mossley.

“At Emmaus, formerly homeless people find meaning and purpose in life. They find a home, meaningful work and begin to make a useful contribution to the wider community.

“The cafe is staffed by Emmaus companions and serves very good food. I know because I have tried it!

“Emmaus Mossley also is fortunate to have the help of many local volunteers who give their time freely and do a variety of jobs.

“Emmaus is based upon true compassion and concern for the vulnerable of the world. It truly offers the gift of love.”

Emmaus Mossley is one of 25 Emmaus communities across the UK. Emmaus supports formerly homeless people by giving them a home, meaningful work in a social enterprise and an opportunity to regain lost self-esteem to help rebuild their lives.
