ROY DOBSON landed the first major of the season with victory in the Committee Cup at Saddleworth Golf Club.

The 66-year-old, who used to live in Uppermill, is no stranger to success as the number of majors he has won runs into the teens.

However, this triumph was especially sweet as it was the first win in the Committee Cup in almost 35 years as a member at Saddleworth.

“I didn’t look at the leader board as I didn’t think I had a chance, but just crept up after two average rounds,” explained Romiley-based Roy whose success saw his handicap reduced from 12 to 11.

Roy had scores of 83-12-71 and 79-12-67 for a two-round total of 138 which was one clear of runner-up Mark Orme whose 139 comprised scores of 73-4-69 and 74-4-70. Third was Dave Fox with 80-10-70 and 81-10-71 for 141.

Phil Sheerin (84-15-69) claimed the first-day prize while honours in the second round went to Nigel Hughes (70-6-64).

Marcus Wray and Tony Isaacs won the Cyril Taylor Cup with a score of 69, two shots clear of Jamie Heywood and Jeff Howarth. Third were Mike Taylor and Gary Banks (72).

B and C Hayes from Ashton Lea scored 44 Stableford points to win the Am Am. Saddleworth;s Mark Riley and Nick Kerin were third with 43 points.

Winners of the seniors’ open were Saddleworth’s D Jagger and M Heap with 42 points in the Stableford which was the same score as second-placed J Davis (Saddleworth) and S Davis (Crompton and Royton).

Saddleworth’s A Dunn and M Shore had the best score from a pair with a combined age of over 140 years. They amassed 40 points.

The Top Dogs, a competition for all the club’s teams, was won by the scratch side of Dave and Stephen Pullen, Lee Blainey, Ben Simpson, Nick Marner, Alan Squires, Gary Simpson and Jamie Heywood.

Fiona Heston won the Spring Meeting with 36 points in the Stableford, three clear of runner-up Jenny Knight.

The Coronation Foursomes saw Sue Booth and Sandra Hague emerge victors with 34 Stableford points which was five clear of runners-up Ann Walsh and Jenny Knight.

Elsewhere, Saddleworth will play Davenport at home in the second round of the Manchester & District Alliance’s City Glass Foursomes having won at Disley in the opening round.

There was no joy for the other teams as they lost at home to Heaton Park in the Dunham Forest Trophy and were beaten by Disley in the Archie Preston Mixed Foursomes.
