Gone but not forgotten: Saddleworth pubs

History by Peter Fox

MUCH-LOVED pubs can be found far and wide across Saddleworth, some dating back as far as the nineteenth century – but many more have been lost to time.

‘Bridge Inn‘, High St, Uppermill c1910 – converted to shop in 1930s and now ‘Frankie Fine Buys’

THE 1851 trade directory for Saddleworth listed 55 inns and that was excluding 29 beer houses which were essentially retailers of beer.

The area is fortunate that the majority of these have survived. However some have been long gone and we look at a few of these in our pictures here.

The buildings in some cases have survived and now serve a different purpose;however some have long disappeared completely from the Saddleworth landscape.
