Greenfield couple celebrate 60 years of marriage

A LIFETIME of love is being celebrated this month by a Greenfield couple who have notched up 60 years of marriage.

Irene and Jack Roebuck, both born and raised in Saddleworth, first started courting as teenagers and married in their early twenties at Saddleworth Church on May 21, 1955.

Tragedy struck the day before the wedding as Irene’s mother sadly died unexpectedly – but the couple decided to continue with the ceremony but cancelled the reception.

Now – four children, ten grandchildren and one great-grandchild later – they are celebrating six happy decades of married life.

They will gather their extensive family along with friends for a party on May 30 at Dobcross Band and Social Club to mark the special occasion.

Jack, 83, was in the building trade and helped build Saddleworth Museum in Uppermill as well as lay the popular stepping-stones in the park.

He said: “We’re very happy together. We wonder sometimes where the time has gone! It’s passed quickly with family life – and plenty of birthday parties!”

Irene, 81, who was a sowing machinist in Delph, added: “We’re just lucky to have each other and we just look after one another.

“We’re very pleased to reach this as not many people do these days.”
