Grasscroft’s LIZ NORBURY, from the Hair & Beauty Therapies department of Oldham College, tells us more about coloured gel overlays
I get asked many times ‘What are gel overlays?’
Mani-Q Gel, Gelish and Gellux are much the same and have been formulated to enhance the growth of the natural nail. It is also very popular for use on toe nails.
To make it easier to apply, these gels now come in bottles similar to nail enamel and are applied in much the same way.
They tend to last two to three weeks depending on how well you look after your hands and nails. Wearing household gloves when doing chores will make it last approximately three weeks.
Due to its flexibility it can be used as a thin layer to protect the natural nail plate. Many clients just have a base and top coat for this reason.
There are also many colours and shades which are applied between the base and top coat. Glittery shades are very popular at the moment ready for holiday season.
Removal is very easy and quite simple with the use of acetone.
This is a professional product and should be done at College, Salon 7 or any other professional salon. Protein bond, anti-bacterial spray and the use of a UV lamp is essential.
